Why Jiu Jitsu Athletes Need a Different Approach

Jiu jitsu places unique demands on the body that are rarely addressed in traditional rehabilitation models.

Athletes are expected to tolerate extreme joint positions, high training volumes, repetitive stress, and unpredictable loads.

Effective rehabilitation requires more than reducing pain—it requires preparing athletes for the specific demands they'll encounter on the mats.

“After injuring my back on the IBJJF Pan No Gi, I thought I would be out for several weeks.

However after seeking Dr. Mike’s professional help, I felt better on day one. I was able to not only heal, but he kept me Jiu Jitsu active the entire time. To my surprise, I felt well enough to compete successfully in two tournaments back to back.

I won a local tournament in Seattle(Rev 50) and I was able to win the IBJJF Houston Fall Open No Gi Absolute, No Gi Medium-Heavy and get a silver medal on GI Medium-Heavy.

Dr. Mike, thank you very much for your expertise and professionalism.”

"For months ago sitting in this position was miserable. I couldn't sit on m knees for more than 30 seconds without them screaming at me and now its a comfortable stretch.

I went through 3 knee surgeries in 5 years (2 ACL reconstructions and 1 meniscus repair), after the third I quite jiu jitsu for almost 6 years.

I decided to come back in May of this last year and two months later ended up with another knee injury.

Michael is the 6th physical therapist I have worked with for injuries with my knees and neck. The things he had me doing helped me improve faster than any other approach I have been given.

I am now able to do jiu jitsu multiple times a week with out pain. The flexibility and strength I feel in my knees is the best I've felt in years. Thank you"

I had Complete ACL Reconstruction as well as a bucket handle torn meniscus a few years back, the surgeon told me it chwould be difficult to return back to competing in Jiu Jitsu.

My healing took about 10-12 months but after that I had extremely poor range of motion specifically straightening and bending all the way.

I kept on my PT vigorously but I just couldn't gain the confidence to wrestle or engage in leg locks ... this really put a damper on my goals of competing again.

Then I met Mike, and he worked with me and gave me a few exercises to really apply myself to and he said it would help.

Flash forward to now! His words were an understatement to say the least! I now can engage in leg attacks, shoot for takedown and roll with confidence! I sincerely credit his knowledge and the exercises he put me on.

Thank you Mike, you are the man sir!
